By this age your children should be taught to:

  • Recognise and show common fractions.
  • Count up and down in hundredths.
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator.
  • Recognise and write decimal equivalents of any number.
  • Find the effect of dividing a one or two digit number by 10 and 100.
  • Round decimals with one decimal place to the nearest whole number.

Common Fractions

Some examples of common fractions are 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5 1/8. Before we can add and subtract fractions they all need to have the same common denominator, this means that they all need to have the same bottom number. For example to add 1/2 and 1/4 time both the top and bottom number by two. So that would be 2/4 and then we can either add or subtract the fraction. The most important thing is that what ever you do to the bottom number you need to do to the top number as well.
